Amish Coffee Cake

Preheat oven to 325 to 350 degrees.
2 cups light brown sugar
2 cups flour
3/4 cup shortening
1 egg
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup hot coffee
1 teaspoon soda
Mix sugar, flour, and shortening until lumpy. Do not mix until creamy. Take out 1 cup for topping. Dissolve soda in hot coffee and add to the flour mixture. Add egg and vanilla. Spread on sheet pan 9 x 12 x 2 inch and sprinkle on topping. This is a thin batter. Bake for approximately 30 minutes. Sprinklewith powdered sugar after baking.
