When I think of the White House, I think of the magic that goes on there. Yes, it is the home of our current President, but there's more to it than just the Oval Office. State Dinners. Evenings of entertainment. And, of course, great food. One area in particular that interests me is the White House Kitchens. Being an avid cook, I can only imagine what it would be like to work there as a chef. If I was a visiting dignitary, what would I be served for luncheon or dinner?? Would I prefer to be served a dish from my own country or try some American food?? I know that when a visiting dignitary is scheduled for a White House visit, great measures are taken to find out what their food preferences are so that no one is embarrassed by what is being served.
My interest in White House cooking and recipes began when John F. Kennedy was president. He and first lady, Jacqueline Kennedy, hosted many formal parties and State Dinners. Yes, that was definately a time of Camelot. From then on, I began following the cuisine of other presidents. Whether you agree or disagree with a president's politics - one thing is for sure - where there's a president and first lady - there's great food. Some of the recipes are very involved; others - not so much and "we, the people" can make these dishes in our own homes. Invariably, some presidentail households have more recipes than others, so I have chosen a variety of recipes to share.
Hope you enjoy them!
